Last week Tourism and Commerce Secretary Frederic Lefebvre announced the launch of the Fête de la Gastromonie on September 23, 2011. This new annual event is the food equivalent to the Fête de la Musique (Music Festival) which was launched by then Cultural Minister Jacques Lang in 1982.
Since it's inauguration the Fête de la Musique has been a national success. Celebrated on June 21st of each year, numerous French cities hold free concerts both in the streets and at regular venues. The Fête de la Gastronomie was created to celebrate the recent UNESCO classification of the French meal as a national heritage. The organisers are now going to fine tune the details for the September event. The objective is to have people discover both the diversity of local produce which the French refer to as the "produits du terroir" and the many regional cuisines of France.
