Open season: Truffles!

The official opening of the 2011-2012 Tuber Melanosporum season kicked off today in the town of Richrenches with a procession by the Brotherhood of the Black Diamond and a special mass blessing these elusive gems. Interestingly truffle are placed into the collection basket as opposed to coins or bank notes. Producers, brokers and just plain old admirers were on hand to attend an entire day dedicated to the first truffles available.

And in an effort to support the cause I spent the morning with my friends Franck and Dominique in the Alpes de Hautes Provence in search of the very first ones. Thanks to some well trained dogs we harvested more than we imagined. Back at the farm house Franck and his keen team of helpers from Calgary, scrubbed them clean and made a delicious brouillade,  the tastiest scambled eggs with giant shavings of fresh truffles. A real treat.
