April 26, 2010 - The students at the Lycée Hotelier in Marseilles are just like regular high school students except that they obtain a slightly different degree. Math, French, Geography and English all figure on the curriculum along side the culinary arts.
The world’s future sommeliers, concierges, hotel directors and chefs are getting a head start. No hoodies or high tops for these 16 year olds. As elegantly dressed as any Parisian Maitre D these lads and lasses are learning all about the hospitality industry. And what better way to learn than on live subjects.
In order not to waste any of the soups, soufflés or sauces whipped up in the kitchens, the school runs two restaurants open to the general public. From Tuesday through Friday lunch consisting of an appetizer, main course and dessert is served in the Brasserie at 12:15 for 13 euros. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings the Restaurant Gastronomic is open for dinner at 7:15pm and costs 26 euros. An extended wine list is available (wine extra). Next to the restaurant is a pastry shop which is open daily. Students are behind the counter selling some of the finest pastries prepared that day at very reasonable prices.
Reservations can only be made by telephone 04 91 73 47 81 and due to the outstanding quality of the food and service, it is best to book at least 2 weeks in advance.
