Vatmaker Marc Nomblot has been selling his concrete tanks for over 20 years but he only introduced the egg in 2001. These egg-shaped vats are now all the rage especially with biodynamic winemakers. For the uninitiated biodynamism involves bringing spiritual and holistic elements into the winemaking process.
Prestigious wineries from around the world have purchased the Nomblot Egg from Marc who is located near Beaune in Burgundy (France). Wine makers from South Africa, Australia, the USA and Italy all rave about the virtues of the egg. It appears that these tanks are flavour neutral and durable. This shape allows the lees to flow more freely which provides better nourishment to the wine. Have a look at the website www.cuves-a-vin.com
Several domaines in Provence use the eggs including Domaine de Lauzières in Mouries and the Domaine Hauvette in St. Remy de Provence. In Jouques Peter & Sandra Fischer of Chateau de Revelette (www.revelette.fr) have 6 of the eggs in which they make 3 reds and 3 whites. Do drop in from Monday to Saturday for a wine tasting. It's a lovely estate and they are the most charming hosts.
